Which air bed suits you?

An air bed is the cheapest and softest sleeping surface for tent and guest room. A low model (20 to 25 cm) is light and fits any sleeping cabin. A raised air bed (40 to 50 cm) gets in and out like a real bed; ideal for guests and families travelling by car. A double air bed is 140 to 160 cm wide; check it fits your sleeping cabin.

What to look for

• Pump: built-in electric pump (230 V) for campsites with hook-up and at home; battery or 12 V pump for tents without power.
• Material: PVC is cheap and tough; TPU is lighter and quieter.
• Top: a flocked top stops sliding and feels warmer.
• Insulation: air takes on the ground temperature; put a blanket or mat underneath, even in summer.
• Load: 150 kilos for singles, 250 to 300 kilos for doubles.

Air bed or self-inflating mat?

An air bed is softer and cheaper but does not insulate and loses some air with temperature changes. A self-inflating mat insulates, holds its air and is the better choice for regular camping; see sleeping mats.
