Electric or gas?

On a campsite with a hook-up, an electric heater is the safest choice: no open flame, no combustion gases, and a thermostat keeps the temperature steady. A gas heater works without electricity and gives a lot of heat, but it uses oxygen and always needs ventilation. Never use a gas heater in a closed tent and do not leave it on while you sleep.

Electric heaters: check your hook-up

Campsites usually supply 4, 6 or 10 amps. At 6 amps you have about 1,380 watts; a 2,000-watt heater will trip the fuse. Choose a heater with a low setting of 500 to 1,000 watts, or turn it down when the kettle is on. A ceramic (PTC) heater warms up quickly and spreads the heat with a fan; a radiant heater mainly warms what is right in front of it. Look for tip-over and overheat protection. Gas heaters on 30 mbar

The Mestic MRK-100, MRK-100M and MRK-100T heaters on wheels work with a 30 mbar regulator, the standard in the Netherlands; check the pressure used in your country. The Mestic MES-100 radiant heater sits directly on the gas cylinder and the MES-120 stands on a fixed frame. A radiant heater is meant for a canopy, an awning with an open side wall or outdoors, not for an enclosed space. For paraffin heaters we stock Qlima siphon pumps and transport caps.

Heating safely

• With any gas heater, keep a vent open or a window ajar.
• Fit a carbon monoxide alarm in the caravan or awning.
• Place the heater on a stable, level surface, well away from tent fabric, curtains and bedding.
• Switch the heater off when you go to sleep or leave.

Which heater suits an awning?

With a hook-up, an electric or ceramic heater of 500 to 1,000 watts with a thermostat. Without electricity, a gas radiant heater, but only if the awning is well ventilated.

How many watts can a heater use on a campsite?

Multiply 230 volts by the amps: 4 amps is 920 watts, 6 amps is 1,380 watts and 10 amps is 2,300 watts. Add up everything that runs at the same time.

Can I use a gas heater in a tent?
