Why a real ski sock?

A ski sock is thin at the toes and instep, so the ski boot stays snug, and reinforced on the shin and heel, where the boot presses. Ordinary sports socks are too thick and crease; that gives cold feet and bruises on the shin. Always wear a single pair and pull nothing over the sock.

What to look for

  • Thickness: thin (light) for well-fitting boots and warm days, medium for most skiers, thick only with roomy boots and extreme cold.
  • Material: merino wool for warmth and odour resistance, synthetic for quick-drying and affordable; most ski socks are a blend.
  • Length: always over the calf, above the cuff of the ski boot.
  • Fit: knitted separately for left and right (Falke) fits best; choose your true shoe size.
  • Heated: Therm-ic socks with a battery for anyone who always has cold feet.

Brands

Falke is the benchmark in ski socks (SK2, SK4) with a left-right fit. Icebreaker makes merino ski socks for several days of wear. Sinner and Icepeak offer affordable sets. Therm-ic makes heated ski socks.
