A caravan awning is bought by A-measurement: the length of the awning rail from the ground, over the roof, to the ground on the other side. How to find the awning that fits your caravan
What is the A-measurement?
The A-measurement (awning size) is the length of your caravan's awning rail, measured from the ground on one side, over the roof, to the ground on the other side. Every caravan awning is made for a range of A-measurements, usually in steps of 25 centimetres. Once you know your A-measurement, you know exactly which awnings fit.
Measure the A-measurement in three steps
- Take a long piece of string or a tape measure and lay it on the ground at the front of the caravan, directly below the start of the awning rail.
- Feed the string through the rail (or lay it tightly along it) over the roof to the rear, and let it drop to the ground at the back.
- Measure the length of the string in centimetres. That is your A-measurement. Measure on level ground with the jockey wheel at its normal height.

Seasonal, touring or porch awning?
A seasonal awning has heavy fabric and a sturdy frame and stays up for months; the choice for a seasonal pitch. A touring awning is lighter and pitched in an hour; for campers who move around. A porch awning covers only part of the rail and is quick and compact. An inflatable awning from Karsten or Kampa is up in fifteen minutes. If you only want shade, a sun canopy fits almost any A-measurement.
What else to look for
- Depth: 240 cm is standard, 300 cm gives extra living space.
- Rail height: awnings come for caravans up to 235 cm, 250 cm and higher; for a tall caravan choose the matching model or a raised frame.
- Frame: aluminium (light) for touring, steel (sturdy) for the seasonal pitch.
- Accessories: groundsheet, window covers, draught skirt, wheel arch cover and inner tent complete the awning; see awning accessories.
Brands with fixed size ranges
Dorema and Isabella use size numbers (for example size 11 for 926 to 950 cm). Walker makes caravan-specific awnings for Eriba and Kip, among others. Karsten offers inflatable awnings and canopies with an adjustable frame covering several sizes.
Frequently asked questions
My A-measurement falls between two sizes. What now?
Choose the size whose range contains your measurement; if it sits exactly on the boundary, the smaller size is usually tighter and the larger one roomier. Ask us if in doubt.
Does the jockey wheel height change the A-measurement?
By a few centimetres. Measure with the caravan level.
Can I see awnings pitched?
