Which sleeping mat suits you?

  • Self-inflating mat: foam core in an airtight shell, open the valve and it fills itself; 3 to 15 cm thick, insulates well, holds its air. The choice for families and caravans.
  • Air mat (inflatable): ultralight and tiny packed, 5 to 10 cm thick, with pump sack; for trekking and cycle touring. Only insulates with an insulated fill.
  • Foam mat: indestructible, cheap, cannot puncture; firm and bulky. For festivals and as a base under another mat.
  • Double mat: 130 cm wide for couples, zip-together or one piece.

R-value: sleeping warm

The R-value shows how well the mat insulates from ground cold. R 1 to 2 for summer, 3 to 4 for spring and autumn, 5 and above for winter camping. A thick mat with a low R-value sleeps colder than a thin one with a high value; check both.

What to look for

Dimensions (183 x 51 cm standard, XL and Wide for tall people and side sleepers), weight and pack size for trekking, a double valve that deflates fast, a brushed top that stops sliding and a repair kit. Store self-inflating mats unrolled at home with the valve open.

Brands

Therm-a-Rest invented the self-inflating mat and leads in trekking mats (NeoAir, ProLite). Sea to Summit brings light air mats with Air Sprung Cells. Human Comfort, Bardani and Bo-Camp make thick comfort mats for families and caravans. Nomad offers solid mats at a sharp price.

Frequently asked questions

Sleeping mat or air bed?

A sleeping mat insulates and holds its air; an air bed is softer and cheaper but gets cold. See air beds.

How thick should a mat be for side sleepers?

At least 5 cm, preferably 7 to 10 cm, so the hip does not bottom out.

Can I repair a leaking mat?

Yes, with the supplied repair kit; find the hole with soapy water. See also self-inflating mats and sleeping bags.
