Choosing the best barbecue: gas, charcoal or electric?
As soon as the first rays of sunshine appear, many people start itching for BBQ season. But with so many different barbecues on the market, the choice isn't always easy. Gas barbecue, charcoal barbecue or electric after all? In this blog we compare the three most popular types so you can make the best choice for your situation.
The gas barbecue: quick and easy
A gas barbecue is the most popular choice among barbecue lovers, and for good reason. The barbecue is up to temperature within minutes and you can start grilling. The temperature can be controlled precisely with the dials, so your meat, fish and vegetables cook exactly the way you want.
A gas barbecue is also easy to clean. There's no ash to clear up and you can simply burn off the grates at high temperature after grilling. The downside? You miss out on the typical smoky flavour you get with charcoal. That said, smoker boxes are available that let you add a smoky aroma anyway.
The charcoal barbecue: for the real flavour experience
Nothing beats the authentic barbecue flavour of grilling over charcoal. The smoke released as the coals burn gives your meat that unmistakable smoky aroma. On top of that, charcoal reaches higher temperatures than gas, which is ideal for quickly searing a steak.
The downside of a charcoal barbecue is the longer start-up time. Allow twenty to thirty minutes for the coals to be properly ready before you can start grilling. The temperature is also harder to control and you have to clear away the ash afterwards. For those who see the grilling itself as part of the ritual, that's actually a plus.
The electric barbecue: ideal for balconies and small gardens
Do you live in a flat or have a small balcony? Then an electric barbecue is an excellent solution. All you need is a plug socket and you're good to go. There's no smoke, so you won't bother the neighbours and you usually won't run into problems with the rules of your owners' association either.
The grilling results of electric barbecues have improved enormously in recent years. Modern models reach temperatures comparable to those of a gas barbecue. The typical charcoal flavour is missing, but for weekday meals and quick grilling sessions an electric BBQ is extremely practical.
The pellet barbecue: the best of both worlds
A relatively new type that is quickly gaining popularity is the pellet barbecue. This barbecue uses compressed wood pellets as fuel and combines the convenience of a gas barbecue with the smoky flavour of charcoal. You set the desired temperature via a digital control panel and the barbecue takes care of the rest.
Pellet barbecues are exceptionally versatile: you can not only grill on them, but also smoke, bake and even braise. Ideal for anyone who loves experimenting in the outdoor kitchen.
Accessories you shouldn't forget
The right barbecue accessories make the difference between good and great grilling. Barbecue tongs with a long handle keep your hands away from the heat, while a meat thermometer ensures your meat is always cooked to perfection. A cast iron griddle is ideal for fish and vegetables that would otherwise fall through the grate.
Don't forget the fuel either. For gas barbecues you need a full gas bottle, for charcoal models quality charcoal or briquettes. And for the true enthusiast: a selection of BBQ rubs and sauces takes your dishes to the next level.
What else should you look out for?
Besides the type of fuel, there are a few other things to consider. The grilling surface should suit the number of people you regularly cook for. For a family of four, a grate of at least 50 by 35 centimetres is recommended. Also pay attention to the quality of the materials: a barbecue made of thick steel or cast aluminium will last for years.
