A tarp is the lightest roof you can take with you: a sheet with eyelets, two poles and guy lines. What to look for

• Size: 3x3 metres for two people, 4x4 or larger for a family.
• Fabric: polyester is light and waterproof, polycotton is cooler and quieter in the rain.
• Eyelets and loops: the more attachment points, the more ways to pitch it.
• Poles: often sold separately; adjustable tarp poles from 180 to 250 cm.
