Which closure suits you?

You close a snowboard boot with traditional laces, a speed-lace system or a BOA dial. Laces let you set every zone of the boot precisely, but take time with gloves on. With BOA you turn a dial and a thin steel cable tightens the boot evenly; you can adjust it on the slope without taking your gloves off. A Double BOA has two dials, one for the foot and one for the cuff, so you set heel hold and ankle support separately. Double BOA models are available from Bataleon, Thirtytwo and Deeluxe, among others.

Soft or stiff: the flex

Brands usually rate stiffness on a scale of 1 to 10. A soft boot (1 to 4) turns easily and forgives mistakes: good for beginners and freestyle in the park. A medium boot (5 to 7) is the all-round choice for the piste. A stiff boot (8 to 10) gives direct control at speed and in deep snow. Match the flex to your board; a stiff boot on a soft board, or the other way round, rides restlessly.

The right size

A snowboard boot should fit snugly. Standing up, your toes just touch the front; bend your knees and they come free. When you lean forward, your heel should not lift. The liner moulds to your foot in the first few days and then feels slightly roomier, so do not size up. Always try boots on with the ski socks you wear on the slope. Women's models have a narrower heel and a lower cuff, so the boot closes better around the calf.

Boot and binding together

Boot and binding have to match: the binding size follows your boot size, and the boot should not stick out far over the edge of the board at the toe or heel. With large feet you will often need a wide board. Browse our snowboards and try boot and binding together in store.

Frequently asked questions

How tight should a snowboard boot be?

Snug, but without pressure points. Standing up, your toes just touch the front and your heel stays in place when you lean forward.

What is the difference between BOA and Double BOA?

With BOA you tighten the whole boot with one dial. With Double BOA you set foot and cuff separately, for more heel hold.
